Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, believes India has the potential to become a global AI powerhouse. He emphasized the country’s abundant resources, including a strong pool of tech talent, a burgeoning digital economy, and a wealth of data. By leveraging these assets, India can transition from a back-office IT hub to a front-office AI innovation center.

“India has all the ingredients to lead the AI revolution,” Huang said. “The natural resources, the digital economy, the deep understanding of computer science—all of these elements are present here.” He further stressed the importance of India retaining control over its data, asserting that the nation should harness this valuable resource to drive innovation and economic growth.

Time for India to change its positioning

“To elevate yourself (India) from an IT cost reduction industry, from a labour outsourcing industry to become an AI production industry, I think you have got to pursue that with all your might. Every aspect of AI, the natural resources are here. The digital economy is here… so there are lots and lots of data. You have deep understanding of computer science, computing, you have massive resources and in order to be an AI industry, to manufacture intelligence, you need energy, data and the computer science expertise. All of three exists right here,” Huang said at the recent Economic Times Conversations. Nvidia, a key player in the AI industry, has a significant presence in India. A substantial portion of the company’s workforce, including senior leadership and engineers, is based in the country. India plays a crucial role in designing Nvidia’s chips and developing its algorithms.

Huang expressed optimism about India’s future, highlighting the vibrant startup ecosystem and the strong understanding of AI’s potential. He noted that AI has the power to democratize technology and empower individuals, regardless of their technical expertise. By making AI accessible to everyone, India can bridge the digital divide and unlock new opportunities for economic and social development.
