Known as one of the most influential figures in Indian couture, Bal’s death was confirmed by the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI). “We mourn the passing of legendary designer Rohit Bal. He was a founding member of the Fashion Design Council of India. Known for his unique blend of traditional patterns with modern sensibilities, Bal’s work redefined Indian fashion and inspired generations. His legacy of artistry, innovation, and forward-thinking will live on in the fashion world,” the FDCI wrote in a social media post.
Bal’s health had been in decline for some time. He was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy, a serious condition affecting the heart’s ability to pump blood effectively. This past year, he had faced complications, including heart pain and kidney failure, and was briefly on life support at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram.
Despite these challenges, Bal made a powerful return to the fashion scene just weeks ago at FDCI x Lakmé Fashion Week, where he showcased his collection Kaaynaat: A Bloom in the Universe with actor Ananya Panday as his showstopper.
Affectionately known as “Gudda” among friends, Bal was born on May 8, 1961, in Srinagar, Kashmir, a place that remained central to his creative vision. A history graduate from St. Stephen’s College in New Delhi, Bal later trained at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), setting the foundation for his illustrious career. He co-founded Orchid Oversea Pvt. Ltd. with his brother in 1986, but it was his solo debut in 1990 that transformed him into a fashion sensation.
Known for his attention to detail, he was the first among his peers to patent and copyright his designs. From collaborations with Khadi Gram Udyog to prêt collections with Biba, and partnerships with brands like HiDesign and Titan, his work extended beyond couture, encompassing jewellery, accessories, and costume design for shows like Kaun Banega Crorepati. Bal’s designs were favoured by global celebrities, including Cindy Crawford, Pamela Anderson, Amitabh Bachchan, and Deepika Padukone.
