The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, has approved the development of the first unit of the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS-1) by expanding the scope of the Gaganyaan Programme. This includes the creation of the first BAS module and the execution of missions to demonstrate and validate the required technologies for building and operating the station. The revised scope and funding of the Gaganyaan Programme will cover new developments for BAS, precursor missions, and additional requirements to meet the program’s ongoing needs. The revision also includes an additional uncrewed mission and new hardware for the Gaganyaan Programme, with the first unit of BAS-1 targeted for launch by December 2028. Originally approved in December 2018, the Gaganyaan Programme focuses on human spaceflight to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and establishing the foundation for India’s long-term human space exploration. The vision under Amrit Kaal includes building an operational Bharatiya Antariksh Station by 2035 and executing a crewed lunar mission by 2040.
The program, led by ISRO in collaboration with industry, academia, and national agencies, aims to develop critical technologies for long-duration human space missions. 4 missions under the current Gaganyaan Programme will be completed by 2026, and the BAS module development, along with 4 demonstration missions, is expected by December 2028. India will gain essential technological capabilities for human space missions to LEO. BAS will enhance microgravity-based scientific research and technology development. This will lead to technological spin-offs, innovation, and increased industrial participation, especially in high-tech sectors, resulting in employment generation. The total funding for the Gaganyaan Programme has now increased to US$ 2.41 billion (Rs. 20,193 crore), including an additional US$ 1.33 billion (Rs. 11,170 crore). This initiative also offers the country’s youth opportunities in science, technology, and microgravity-based research, with far-reaching benefits for society.
