Hindustan Unilever completes sale of Pureit water business to A.O. Smith

Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL) announced on Friday that it has completed the divestment of its water purification business under the Pureit brand to A.O. Smith, a leader in water treatment solutions. This marks the fulfilment of an agreement signed on 15th July between the two companies, aiming to expand A.O. Smith’s portfolio and strengthen its distribution in India.

In its regulatory filing, HUL stated, “Pursuant to Regulation 30(7) of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015, it is hereby informed that the Company has, on 1st November, 2024, completed the sale and divestment of its Water Purification business carried under the brand ‘Pureit’.”

Pureit offers an extensive range of residential water purifiers primarily marketed in India, where it has established itself as a significant player in the sector.

Kevin J Wheeler, Chairman and CEO of A.O. Smith, highlighted that Pureit’s offerings will complement A.O. Smith’s existing premium brands.

“Pureit complements our premium brands in the market and their strength in e-commerce will allow us to expand our presence in that channel. This acquisition aligns with our strategy of adding scale and enhances our premium water treatment product portfolio and distribution footprint,” he noted.

The divestment allows HUL to focus on its core business lines, while A.O. Smith gains valuable scale and expertise in the region’s water purification market.

Our cultures align closely, emphasising innovation, best-in-class customer service and premium products. Together, we will elevate our brand and expand our reach and impact across South Asia,” Parag Kulkarni, President of A.O. Smith Indian Water Products added.
