On Monday, the Union Cabinet announced seven new schemes with a total investment of nearly US$ 1.68 billion (Rs. 14,000 crore) aimed at enhancing the agriculture and allied sectors. These initiatives focus on research and education, climate resilience, natural resource management, and digitization in agriculture, along with promoting the growth of livestock and horticulture. The primary objective is to equip farmers for climate-resilient agricultural practices. Notable programs include a Digital Agriculture Mission of US$ 337 million (Rs. 2,817 crore) and a scheme for crop science of US$ 476 million (Rs. 3,979 crore), which encompasses various pillars such as plant genetic resource management and research on insects and microbes.
Additionally, the Cabinet approved an initiative to strengthen agricultural education and management under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research of US$ 274 million (Rs. 2,291 crore), aligning with the New Education Policy 2020. The funding will support modernizing agri-research through advanced technologies like AI and big data. Other significant schemes include a program for sustainable livestock health of US$ 204 million (Rs. 1,702 crore), an initiative for horticulture development of US$ 103 million (Rs. 860 crore), and a scheme for strengthening Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) of US$ 144 million (Rs. 1,202 crore), alongside a plan for Natural Resource Management of US$ 133 million (Rs. 1,115 crore), benefiting the extensive network of over 700 KVKs nationwide.
