India backs first G20 Ministerial declaration on disaster risk reduction in Brazil

A high-level Indian delegation, headed by Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, PK Mishra, participated in the G20 Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group (DRRWG) Ministerial Meeting in Belem, Brazil, from 30 October to 1 November 2024.

India’s active role contributed to the finalisation of the first Ministerial declaration on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), with a focus on five key priorities outlined during its G20 Presidency: early warning systems, resilient infrastructure, DRR financing, resilient recovery, and nature-based solutions.

During multiple Ministerial sessions, Mishra underscored India’s proactive approach to disaster risk reduction, spotlighting the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI)—a global initiative by Prime Minister Narendra Modi that now includes 40 nations and seven international organisations as members.

He reiterated India’s commitment to the Sendai Framework and called for strengthened international collaboration on technology transfer, sustainable development, and knowledge sharing to bolster global disaster resilience.

The Indian delegation also engaged in Troika meetings with Brazil and South Africa and held discussions with representatives from Japan, Norway, Germany, South Korea, and other nations. Mishra, responding to the UN Secretary-General’s call on extreme heat, shared India’s steps to mitigate such risks, including promoting traditional practices suited to local climates.

Congratulating Brazil on elevating the DRRWG to the ministerial level, Dr. Mishra affirmed India’s continued support for disaster resilience efforts, offering assistance to South Africa as they prepare to lead the G20 next year. India’s participation underscores its leadership in global disaster risk reduction and its commitment to building a safer, resilient world.
