Domestic air traffic rises 7.3% to 12.9 million on annual basis in July

In July 2024, Indian carriers transported over 12.9 million passengers, marking a 7.3% increase compared to the same period last year, although this was a decline from the 13.2 million passengers flown in June. IndiGo maintained its dominance in the domestic air traffic market, increasing its share to 62%, while Air India’s share dropped to 14.3%. Vistara’s market share rose to 10%, whereas AIX Connect and SpiceJet saw declines to 4.5% and 3.1%, respectively. Additionally, Akasa Air and Alliance Air’s shares fell to 4.7% and 0.9%. From January to July 2024, domestic airlines carried 923.35 lakh passengers, a 4.7% increase from the same period in the previous year.

Despite the growth in passenger numbers, operational challenges persisted. In July, approximately 154,770 passengers were affected by cancellations, with airlines compensating Rs. 110.59 lakh (US$ 131,816). Flight delays impacted 320,302 passengers, leading to Rs. 341.05 lakh (US$ 406,474) in facilitation costs. The overall cancellation rate for airlines reached 1.90%, and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) reported receiving 1,097 passenger-related complaints, translating to about 0.84 complaints per 10,000 passengers carried.
