Grenade attack in Srinagar flea market injures nine

At least nine individuals were injured when terrorists launched a grenade at a crowded flea market in the center of Srinagar on Sunday (November 3), according to officials.

Initial reports indicate that the attack occurred near the Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) during the bustling Sunday market. Local media outlet Greater Kashmir reported that the grenade was thrown outside the TRC playground, which was filled with shoppers. The Sunday Market is a weekly event held along the road near TRC in Lal Chowk, a busy area in Srinagar.

There have been no reports of fatalities from this incident. This attack follows the elimination of a high-ranking commander from Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) by security forces just a day prior in the Khanyar area of downtown Srinagar.

According to PTI, police and paramilitary forces arrived on the scene to evacuate the injured and initiate a search operation for the assailants. The explosion created chaos in the area, causing shoppers to flee for safety.

The injured, comprising eight men and one woman, have been transported to SMHS Hospital, where they are reportedly in stable condition. An official cited by the news agency Mint confirmed that all injured individuals received immediate medical attention.

Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed his distress over the attack on innocent shoppers on social media platform X, calling it “deeply disturbing.” He remarked, “Recent days have been marked by a series of attacks and encounters in the valley. The news of a grenade attack on shoppers at the ‘Sunday market’ in Srinagar is particularly alarming.”

Congress leader Ravinder Sharma also voiced concerns about the rising violence since the recent elections and formation of the new government, the ANI reported. He described the incident as a “conspiracy to disturb the atmosphere” in Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting the crowded Sunday market as a target.
