India and Malaysia have elevated their bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership following extensive discussions between Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi and Malaysian Prime Minister Mr. Anwar Ibrahim. The talks, which focused on enhancing cooperation across various trade, investment, and defence sectors, resulted in at least 8 agreements. Notably, a significant pact was signed to promote the recruitment of Indian workers in Malaysia and safeguard their interests, addressing concerns over illegal immigration and human trafficking. During his first visit to India as Prime Minister, Mr. Anwar Ibrahim emphasised the importance of this partnership.
Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi highlighted the robust economic engagement between the two nations, with bilateral trade conducted in Rupees and Malaysian Ringgit. He stressed the potential for expanded cooperation in key areas like semiconductors, Fintech, defence, artificial intelligence, and quantum technology. The leaders also agreed to accelerate the review of the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) and to connect India’s UPI digital payment system with Malaysia’s PayNet. Additionally, both sides committed to ASEAN centrality, timely review of the India-ASEAN free trade agreement, and peaceful resolution of regional disputes, particularly in the South China Sea. The partnership will also establish an Ayurveda Chair at Malaysia’s University Tunku Abdul Rahman and a Tiruvalluvar Chair at the University of Malaya, further strengthening cultural ties.
