India’s first Mars-Moon analogue mission kicks off in Ladakh’s space-like terrain

India’s first analogue space mission has commenced in Leh, led by ISRO’s Human Spaceflight Centre in collaboration with Aaka Space Studio, the University of Ladakh, and IIT Bombay, with support from the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council. This mission simulates life in an interplanetary habitat to address the challenges of establishing a base station beyond Earth. Aaka Space Studio, founded by Ms. Aastha Jhala, has developed a habitat prototype equipped with advanced technology, including an EVA preparation zone, circadian lighting, hydroponics, a solar power system, and environmental monitoring. The high-altitude, Mars-like environment of Ladakh offers unique conditions with low oxygen levels and extreme temperature variations, making it ideal for testing sustainable human habitats for space exploration.

The month-long mission aims to study human adaptation to isolation and harsh environments, and the insights gained will be shared with the global scientific community. A crucial step in advancing space habitation technology, this mission lays the groundwork for future analogue research by India, which is set to play a significant role in the country’s long-term goals for a sustainable human presence on the Moon and Mars. The mission reflects India’s dedication to contributing to global space exploration efforts and deepening the understanding of human capabilities in extraterrestrial settings.
