Country has witnessed highest ever coal production in the year 2023-24

The country achieved its highest-ever coal production in the 2023-24 fiscal year, reaching a provisional figure of 997.828 million tonnes (MT). This represents a significant increase from previous years, with production steadily rising from 730.874 MT in 2019-20 to 893.191 MT in 2022-23. In addition, coal imports have also risen, reaching 261.001 MT in the latest fiscal year compared to 248.537 MT in 2019-20. The robust production figures highlight the country’s growing coal output and reduced import reliance.

Coal mining is regulated under the Mines Act 1952, with oversight from the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS). The DGMS is responsible for developing safety legislation, conducting inspections, investigating accidents, and implementing risk management strategies. Various measures are in place to enhance mine safety and reduce accidents, including Site-Specific Risk Assessment-based Safety Management Plans (SMPs), Principal Hazards Management Plans (PHMPs), and comprehensive training programs. For Open Cast (OC) mines, initiatives include using eco-friendly Surface Miners, advanced safety technologies, and ergonomic improvements. In Underground mines, efforts focus on mechanization, improved roof control, and emergency response planning. Continuous supervision and regular inspections further ensure compliance with safety standards and enhance operational efficiency.
