E-commerce sites record Rs. 1 trillion (US$ 11.9 billion) in sales; non-metros drove festive shopping

E-commerce platforms in India generated approximately Rs. 1 trillion (US$ 11.9 billion) in sales during the recent festive season, reflecting a growth of over 20% compared to last year. This surge was driven by increased demand from non-metro consumers and a heightened interest in luxury brands, with the first week alone accounting for more than half of total sales, largely due to major events like Flipkart’s Big Billion Days and Amazon’s Great Indian Festival. Smartphones emerged as the top-selling category, with online sales making up nearly 65% of all smartphone purchases, particularly in premium and mid-premium segments.

The festive season also saw significant growth in various categories, including home appliances and luxury fashion, with some items experiencing over 400% growth compared to regular levels. Platforms like Meesho reported a 40% increase in orders, while UPI transactions surged to 16.58 billion, reflecting a 45% YoY growth. Quick commerce performed well, contributing an estimated US$ 1.1-1.2 billion in sales, and several direct-to-consumer brands experienced remarkable YoY increases, showcasing the overall robust performance of the e-commerce sector during the festive period.
