Maruti Suzuki e Vitara revealed with 500 km range and AWD option; India launch in March 2025

Maruti Suzuki has officially revealed the e Vitara, the production version of its eVX concept, during an event in Milan. This midsize electric SUV is Maruti Suzuki’s first venture into the electric vehicle (EV) segment in India and will be manufactured at Suzuki’s Gujarat facility, with half of the production intended for export to Japan and Europe.

The e Vitara will debut in India at the Bharat Mobility Show in New Delhi in January 2025, with sales commencing in March. It will go up against the likes of Tata Curvv EV, MG ZS EV, Hyundai Creta EV, and Mahindra BE 05 on the domestic market. The European launch will follow around June 2025.

The e Vitara closely mirrors the eVX concept showcased at Auto Expo 2023 and the Japan Mobility Show. It retains key design elements, such as the tri-slash LED daytime running lights and the pronounced rear wheel arch. The exterior features a rugged two-box shape with extensive dark cladding, typical of traditional SUVs, and wheel sizes up to 19 inches on the all-wheel-drive (AWD) version. The rear door handles have been repositioned to the C-pillar, reminiscent of older Suzuki Swift models.

Originally set for an October 2024 launch, the e Vitara was delayed to March 2025 due to development challenges, particularly related to software. Suzuki President Toshihiro Suzuki explained that the company went through “repeated trial and error to create an easy-to-use BEV.” Maruti Suzuki aims to deliver a reliable, user-friendly vehicle, staying true to the brand’s reputation for efficiency and quality.

In terms of pricing, the base 49 kWh variant is likely to start around ₹20 lakh (ex-showroom), with the 61 kWh version reaching ₹25 lakh. The AWD model could be priced close to ₹30 lakh.

The vehicle’s dimensions remain unchanged at 4,275 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width, and 1,635 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,700 mm. This extended wheelbase allows for a spacious cabin and the accommodation of a substantial battery pack. It has a ground clearance of 180 mm, suitable for Indian roads, and a kerb weight ranging from 1,702 kg to 1,899 kg.

Built on the new Heartect-e skateboard platform, the e Vitara was co-developed with Toyota and is entirely electric. The platform features integrated eAxles, which combine the motor and inverter. Suzuki emphasises the platform’s combination of the robust characteristics of an SUV with the modern feel of an EV. Additionally, a Toyota counterpart based on this platform is expected to follow later in 2025.

Battery options for the e Vitara include 49 kWh and 61 kWh LFP blade cells supplied by BYD. Unlike most manufacturers in India who assemble battery packs locally, Suzuki will import complete battery packs. The 49 kWh model features a front-mounted motor with 144 hp and 189 Nm of torque, while the 61 kWh variant produces 174 hp with the same torque. The AWD version, branded as AllGrip-e, adds a 65 hp motor on the rear axle, generating a total output of 184 hp and 300 Nm of torque.

The AWD system also includes a Trail mode that mimics a limited-slip differential by braking spinning wheels and redistributing torque to others. Although official range figures have not been confirmed, the 61 kWh version is expected to exceed 500 km on global test cycles.

The interior represents a significant step forward for Maruti Suzuki, featuring a modern design with a floating dual-screen layout for infotainment and instrumentation. The dashboard has a shelf-like design, and a glossy black floating centre console provides storage underneath, equipped with USB ports. Highlights include a two-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel, brushed silver surrounds on the air vents, and a rotary drive mode selector.

The interior also offers features like a wireless phone charger, electronic parking brake, heated mirrors, and a host of ADAS technologies, such as Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keep Assist.

The rear seat includes split-folding functionality, three-point seatbelts, ISOFIX mounts, and adjustable headrests. Suzuki has engineered a high roof and a spacious wheelbase to offer generous headroom and legroom. However, it remains to be seen how the high ground clearance and battery placement affect the cabin floor height and seating comfort.
