The National Tele-Mental Health Programme in India has achieved a significant milestone, receiving over 10 lakh calls on its Tele-MANAS toll-free number, with an average of 3,500 calls per day. Launched by the Government of India in October 2022, this initiative operates 51 Tele-MANAS cells across all States and Union Territories, providing multi-language support through the toll-free numbers 14416 or 1-800-891-4416. The steady increase in calls, from approximately 12,000 in December 2022 to over 90,000 in May 2024, reflects growing awareness and utilization of mental health services. This trend underscores the importance of continued investment and expansion of mental health initiatives to ensure accessible support, incorporating call-backs for follow-up and linking existing mental health resources to establish a comprehensive digital network.
The government’s dedication to expanding mental health services, particularly targeting vulnerable populations, marks a significant milestone in India’s efforts to combat the mental health crisis and provide support to all individuals and households. Looking ahead, integration with initiatives like e-Sanjeevani will further enhance the platform’s accessibility and effectiveness. By continuing to promote awareness and accessibility, Tele-MANAS can significantly contribute to addressing the nation’s mental health challenges.
