Pune electors raise local issues through ‘citizens’ manifestos’

As the Maharashtra assembly elections approach, Pune residents have crafted “citizens’ manifestos” to spotlight essential local issues.

With the Maharashtra assembly polls just around the corner, residents of Pune have drafted their own set of demands as part of “citizens’ manifestos” to highlight basic issues, and have urged candidates to address them in their manifestos.

Key concerns dominating these charter of demands include lack of proper water supply, poor road infrastructure, encroachments, traffic snarls, improper sewage systems, noise pollution, frequent power outages, and the need for the implementation of development plans (DPs).

Ajit Pawar, Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, is confident of securing over 175 seats in the upcoming state elections for Mahayuti .

The opposition MVA released its manifesto for the November 20 Maharashtra elections on Sunday. It promised free cervical cancer vaccines for girls aged 9 to 16 and two optional leave days for women during menstruation.

The manifesto, called ‘Maharashtranama’, also promised a caste-based census, Rs 3,000 monthly financial aid, free bus travel, and six cooking gas cylinders each year at Rs 500 for women.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah did not name the chief ministerial candidate for Mahayuti. With a smile and Deputy Chief Minster Devendra Fadnavis by his side, he said the name would be revealed after the elections. The remarks came during the launch of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) manifesto for the November 20 elections.

In Nagpur Southwest, Fadnavis’ stronghold, there’s little doubt among his supporters. “Since 1999, we’ve chosen Deva Bhau Fadnavis as our MLA, and he became CM in 2014. He made a big sacrifice by becoming Deputy CM in 2022, stepping aside for Eknath Shinde as alliance dynamics required. But now, he deserves to be CM,” a group of women BJP supporters told CNN-News18 at a rally.

Shah clarified that the alliance’s current CM candidate is Eknath Shinde and that the three partners will decide on the next CM after the election results are in.
