Two days after expressing concern over farmers’ protests and asking the Centre to hold discussions with them, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar said in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday (December 5, 2024) that Prime Minister Narendra Modi brought the issues of farmers to the centre stage. He was responding to former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, who appreciated Mr. Dhankhar for expressing his concern for farmers.
The V-P, who is ex-officio Chairman of the Upper House, said the PM prioritised farmers in every scheme, including affordable housing, solar houses, drinking water supply through taps and technology. “Therefore our expectations are bound to be high. It is a time when there is convergence to take the farmer to a greater height,” he said.
Mr. Dhankhar said he had no doubt what was being done at the moment would gain greater momentum and that all agencies were converging to achieve it. “Our expectations are high, but our accomplishments are also historic; our achievements are also splendid, and this will go a long way for the nation,” he said.
Earlier, Mr. Gowda recalled that Mr. Dhankhar on Tuesday (December 3, 2024) spoke about farmers and their issues. “You are so much concerned about the farming community. I am a farmer,” he said.
Mr. Dhankhar, at a function in Mumbai, had asked Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to hold dialogue with protesting farmers. He had also ridiculed the perception that more minimum support price to farmers would result in inflation.
