As part of his birth centenary celebrations, the Belagavi City Corporation plans to name a road in Belagavi after B. Shankaranand, former Union Minister and veteran Congressman. A resolution was passed at a BCC meeting in Belagavi on Thursday.
BCC member Sandeep Jeergyal proposed that Club Road that connects Rani Channamma Circle to the British-era Belgaum Club, be named after the former Minister. All the members supported the proposal. MLAs Abhay Patil and Asif (Raju) Sait seconded the move. Mayor Savita Kamble instructed officers to check the official name of the road and take measures to rename it. Some members demanded an installation of a statue of Shankaranand.
Born in 1925 in Kanagali village near Chikkodi, Mr. Shankaranand went on to win the Lok Sabha elections seven times. He served as a Union Minister for over two decades under various Prime Ministers. He held important portfolios like education, health, law, irrigation, and energy.
He was considered close to Congress leaders like Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and P.V. Narasimha Rao. He chaired the joint parliamentary committee formed to look into the controversial Bofors deal. He died in Belagavi in 2009, at the age of 84. He had eight children.
