India is set to launch its Critical Mineral Mission in 2025, a major initiative to secure essential minerals for the country’s green energy transition and the growth of its electric vehicle sector. This mission will unite several ministries, industries, research and development institutions, and global think tanks to ensure a sustainable supply of critical minerals. As the world competes to secure resources like lithium and cobalt, India is positioning itself as a key player with plans to acquire mineral assets, particularly in Australia, and attract international investment.
The demand for critical minerals is projected to surge, especially for electric vehicles, renewable energy technologies, and semiconductors. India’s efforts include a joint venture, Khanij Bidesh India Ltd (KABIL), focusing on acquiring and processing strategic minerals globally. The government has already auctioned 24 critical mineral blocks. It will continue to promote offshore mining through roadshows to attract new bidders. As part of its broader strategy, India aims to leverage its rare earth deposits, larger than those in Australia and Canada, for sustainable and high-tech exploration. With industries like Vedanta Ltd and Hindustan Zinc emphasising the critical role these minerals will play in India’s economic growth, the country is on track to enhance its mining capabilities and reduce import dependency, contributing to its goal of becoming a global leader in the sector.
