The Sree Sathsanga Papanasam Sivan Awards were presented to Carnatic vocalist Maharajapuram S. Ramachandran and veena vidhushi R.S. Jayalakshmi on Thursday at inauguration of the 35th year Music, Dance, and Drama Festival of the Sree Sath Sangam Papanasam Sivan Karnataka Sangeetha Sabha in Madipakkam.
Speaking at the event, V. Kamakoti, Director, Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M), said IIT-M was encouraging more girl students to enrol. Currently, 20% of the students were girls. He said parents should encourage children to continue specialising in the fine arts and that IIT-M was offering seats to such candidates based on scholarships from various institutions, including grading by All India Radio.
The sabha was started in 1989 to commemorate the centenary celebrations of composer Papanasam Sivan. The events will be held till January 12.
