In what it calls ‘a dhakad beginning to 2025’, Netflix on Friday unveiled the trailer of its upcoming prison drama series, Black Warrant. Created and show-run by Vikramaditya Motwane and Satyanshu Singh, the series premieres on the platform on January 10.
In the trailer, we see Sunil Kumar Gupta (Zahan Kapoor), step into a world the ropes of which he’s ignorant about. As the newly-appointed Assistant Superintendent of Prison, he says he is tasked with three important duties – Upkeep, Supervision and Control – all of which is bound to go for a toss given he’s posted in one of the most unforgiving prisons in the country: Tihar Jail.
“Sunil Gupta steps unwittingly into the jaws of a system where power and reputation reign supreme and survival demands a price. Alongside him, his two trusted fellow jailers confront Tihar’s notorious inmates and the entrenched politics. Armed with little more than grit and determination, the trio faces towering challenges within Tihar. This never-seen-before account traces the deeply personal stories of inmates, officers, and their complex dynamics. Will they be able to challenge the system and bring change for the better, or will Tihar change them?” read the logline.

Black Warrant is inspired by true events and is a dramatised adaptation of ‘Black Warrant: Confessions Of A Tihar Jailer,’ written by author and former superintendent at Tihar Jail, Sunil Gupta, and journalist-author, Sunetra Choudhury.
In a statement, Motwane said that Black Warrant offered him an opportunity to explore a hidden world that’s tough, complicated, and full of contradictions. “Sunil’s journey through Tihar Jail provided a unique perspective like no other to capture that complexity. The trailer is just a glimpse of how the series will peel back the layers of a world that is as brutal as it is complex as it is fun. Collaborating with our stellar cast brought incredible nuance to this story, and partnering with Netflix, Applause Entertainment and Confluence Media allowed us to craft a narrative that is raw, gripping, and deeply human. I can’t wait for viewers to uncover the humanity and grit within this powerful narrative,” he said.
The series features Rahul Bhat, Paramvir Singh Cheema, Anurag Thakur and Sidhant Gupta. Rajshri Deshpande, Tota Roy Chaudhary and Rajendra Gupta will feature in special appearances.
Motwane and Satyanshu Singh also serve as directors alongside Ambiecka Pandit, Arkesh Ajay and Rohin Raveendran Nair. The series is produced by Andolan Production in collaboration with Confluence Media and is presented by Applause Entertainment.
