Bureau of Indian Standards celebrates 78th Foundation Day

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) on Monday celebrated its 78th Foundation Day with discussions and technical sessions held on implementation of sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Addressing the gathering, president of Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry N. Jegatheesan spoke about the role of BIS in maintaining product quality and consumer safety and said that programmes should be conducted so that the traders and manufacturers were aware of the latest developments.

Senior Director and Head, BIS Madurai, S.D. Dayanand, in his welcome address, spoke about the main objective of the programme. He gave an outline on the history of BIS and its evolution over the years.

Following the inaugural session, a technical session was held with presentations on various topics such as ‘Grow sustainably with continuous quality in products, process, and people’ , ‘Implementation of SDGs in the Industrial Sector’, ‘Quality and Sustainability in the Pulp and Paper Industry’ and ‘Energy saving methods for Sustainability Development’.

Joint Director of BIS Madurai Hemalatha P. Panicker made a presentation on BIS activities and the role of industries as a major stakeholder. She also spoke on how industries can contribute in formulating Indian standards that will be acceptable to a large number of nations which in turn will facilitate the country’s international trade.

Joint Director of BIS Madurai A. Arivazhagan proposed a vote of thanks. More than 200 people representing various industries, laboratories and industrial associations participated in the event. The participants took a BIS oath, ‘Quality Pledge’, at the event.
