HMPV in India: First case of 8-month-old infected in Bengaluru

India reported the first case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) on Monday (January 6). Reports said an 8-month-old child in Bengaluru is infected with the virus.

The case came to notice in a Baptist hospital in the city.

The report said the child does not have any travel history.

The case was confirmed by the Karnataka Health Department. It has notified the Union Health Ministry about the case.

An official source told PTI that the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is closely monitoring respiratory and seasonal influenza cases in the country, and is in touch with international agencies in the wake of the recent reports of an outbreak of the HMPV in China.

Director General of Health Services (DGHS), Dr Atul Goel, said the Human Metapneumovirus is like any other respiratory virus that causes common cold, and it could cause flu-like symptoms in the young and the very old.

Former Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) scientist Dr Raman Gangakhedkar told News18 that there is no need to be alarmed about HMPV unless a global health agency reports a genetic mutation, as the virus, in its current form, is unlikely to cause severe infections.

He explained that even though HMPV has been around for many years, influenza A and H1N1 among others have garnered more focus from the researchers’ community because they are more lethal.
