The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday (January 6, 2024) started the process of framing charges under Section 4 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) against Sujay Krishna Bhadra over a video call in the West Bengal primary school teachers’ recruitment scam case.
Mr. Bhadra, alias Kalighater Kaku, was informed about the charges virtually as he is still hospitalised.
One of the prime accused in the case, he was presented at Kolkata’s Bankshall court virtually at 2 p.m. in front of Judge Subhendu Saha. Charges were also framed against the other five accused — Partha Chatterjee, Manik Bhattacharya, Santanu Bandhopadhyay, Santu Gangopadhyay, and Ayal Sil.
ED officials said all the accused in the case had taken money from the candidates
The court said ED officials have sufficient proof against Mr. Bhadra and others to frame charges against them.
The process was delayed for a week as on December 30, Mr. Bhadra reportedly fell ill and lost consciousness after which he was shifted to a medical facility. He was reportedly placed on a ventilator after he complained of uneasiness. He was later shifted to a private facility.
