Efforts on to fill up vacancies in electricity department

The Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) has sent a proposal to the State government for filling vacancies of technical and non-technical staff members. The vacancies in the TNPDCL which were formed from Tangedco, have left the existing staff, particularly technical workers involved in the operation and management of maintaining power supply, burdened with heavy work.

A senior official of TNPDCL confirming the backlog of vacancies said the proposal for filling the vacant posts of technical and non-technical staff is in an advanced stage of approval by the State government. On receiving the nod, the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) would begin the recruitment process. According to the senior electricity department official, 750 Assistant Engineer (AE) posts, 750 wiremen and helpers and 500 non-technical staff posts were lying vacant. The vacancies would be filled by September this year, the official added.

The electricity department has been facing shortage of technical staff, comprising assistant engineers, wiremen and helpers, and assessors in the non-technical staff category. The technical staff shortage in the city has burdened the officials in the operation and maintenance section with additional work load.

An office-bearer of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board Engineers’ Union said in several section offices, one AE has to take care of two section offices as also the wiremen and helpers who work to restore power supply in case of disruptions.

The TNEBEU has also given a representation addressed to the TNPDCL chairman and managing director to fill up the technical staff vacancies through promotion as there are a number of eligible candidates.
