An illegal fireworks unit functioning on a poultry farm at Vadivilliputhiriyendal near Manamadurai. in Sivaganga district was sealed by a team of officials on Friday.
Following complaints from the public about stealthy operations at the farm, Senthatiyendal Village Administrative Officer Raja lodged a complaint with the police. A team of officials, including Deputy Superintendent of Police Niresh and Tahsildar Krishnakumar, conducted the raid.
The farm belonged to one Muthukumar who was running a poultry business on the premises. For the last 10 days, some workers had been clandestinely engaged in manufacturing crackers. The officials seized flower pots, rockets, chakrams and other crackers from the farm.
On seeing the officials, some of the workers ran away. The police seized goods worth over ₹5 lakh and sealed the premises.
It is suspected that following severe restrictions and intensified vigil by officials in neighbouring Virudhunagar district, some cracker units there might have shifted base to Sivaganga district. The officials warned that stern action would be taken against illegal cracker units.
The Sivaganga police have formed a special team to nab the farm owner and the other accused.
