A trip down chocolate lane

Every bite is pure, unadulterated joy.

When my wife returned from her Europe trip not long ago, she brought back an exquisite collection of chocolates. Dark, milk, white — the spectrum seemed endless. Yummy doesn’t even begin to describe them. I found myself in a private chocolate haven, savouring each piece in treasured moments. From the bitter notes of dark Belgian chocolate to the sweet, caramel undertones of a Swiss milk bar, each bite was a story waiting to be told.

The first bite was sheer bliss. Each nibble was a journey through rich, velvety flavours that melted in my mouth, sending waves of euphoria through my senses. The chocolate bar quickly vanished, leaving me craving more. The house was filled with laughter, the air thick with the intoxicating aroma of cocoa. It was a day to remember, a testament to the fact that chocolate is meant to be shared, to bring people together. But truth be told, I am, at 67, quite possessive about my full bar.

And isn’t there a touch of romance in every bite? I fondly recall the first box of chocolates I gifted to my wife on our anniversary. The way her eyes lit up was magical, as if each piece was a promise of joy wrapped in shiny foil. It was love at first bite! Luxurious, passionate, and exciting, chocolate is the universal language of love and indulgence. As my centenarian mother used to say, “Chocolate doesn’t need a reason or season to be eaten.” Even at 99, she relished her bite. Young or old, we all fall prey to its irresistible charm.

A few years ago, I had the ecstatic experience of visiting the Philip Island Chocolate Factory in Melbourne. It was like stepping into a modern-day wonderland. The factory was a marvel, brimming with an array of delectable selections and free samples that would make any chocolate-lover swoon. One section allowed visitors to make their own chocolate designs and recipes, adding ingredients such as nuts, fruits, and even spices, and glossily wrap it like a ready-to-market stuff. I felt like a true chocolatier, crafting my personal masterpiece and eating it on the spot.

Chocolate there was more than just food; it was a culture. The tour was a delicious adventure, complete with a river of melted chocolate and intricate chocolate sculptures that seemed too enticing to eat. But eat we did, with childlike glee and sticky fingers. It was an experience that underscored chocolate’s magical ability to spark joy.

Trust me, World Chocolate Day may offer an extra excuse for a treat, but for a true chocoholic, the longing is a daily temptation. I recall an afternoon working from home, feeling the familiar tug of chocolate desire. I reached for my hidden stash and indulged in a couple of pieces (or five?).

Now, how do you eat chocolate? Do you let it melt slowly on your tongue, savouring every nuance, or take quick bites, eager for the next piece? Or perhaps you prefer a big bite, letting the flavours explode? Those moments when chocolate gets a little messy — a smear on your lips or a slurp from your fingers — add to the charm. For me, there’s no wrong way to eat chocolate. Each method has its own delight, and every bite is pure, unadulterated joy.

As I conclude this chocolate journey, let me share a truth: chocolate has a magical ability to uplift spirits. As the saying goes, “Nine out of 10 people like chocolate. The tenth person always lies.” Even celebrities aren’t immune to its charms. Oprah Winfrey, the famous American talk show host, once said, “My idea of heaven is a great big baked potato and someone to share it with; of course, chocolate for dessert.”

Whether it is celebrating a special occasion or just a daily treat: Happy indulging!
