Akasa Air will add seven destinations in CY 2025

Mumbai :

Akasa Air will add 5-7 destinations in 2025 as it expects an improvement in its aircraft deliveries.

Akasa Air inducted 20 Boeing 737 Max aircraft in its first year of operations. Growth has slowed down since then with airline receiving four planes last year.

The airline’s founder-CEO Vinay Dube didn’t give a guidance but said Akasa Air will receive more than four planes in 2025. It took delivery of its 27th aircraft on Wednesday.

Dube said the new aircraft will be used to increase frequencies on existing routes and add 5-7 domestic and international destinations including Jewar and Navi Mumbai. At present the airline flies to 27 cities.

Dube doesn’t see Akasa losing out to peers because of delays in aircraft deliveries. “We will have plenty of planes to serve Navi Mumbai and Jewar airports. These airports are being built to handle millions of passengers and will be developed in phases,” he said.

Cost pressure

Airlines in India are facing cost pressure due to increase in maintenance expenses and rise in aeronautical fees. In case of Akasa there is also an employee productivity issue as around 40 per cent of its pilots are under training and hence unable to undertake duties.

Dube said the airline continues to demonstrate cost discipline and operational reliability. “FY25 has not been a difficult year. We are ahead of our financial plan,” he said.

On the issue of regulatory lapses, Dube the airline takes two pronged approach to correct defects. This means taking action at an individual and a system wide level.

In the recent weeks the airline has been penalised by the regulator. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation ordered suspension of its heads of operations and training for lapses. Dube denies that these slip ups were due to lack of management oversight.
