Around 337,900 MW power capacity likely to be added by 2032: Minister of State for Power

Union Minister of State for Power, Mr. Shripad Naik, informed Parliament that India is expected to add 337,900 MW of power generation capacity by 2032. Over the past decade, 214,237 MW of electricity generation capacity has been added, resulting in a 79.5% increase from 248,554 MW in March 2014 to 446,190 MW by June 2024. This substantial growth reflects the country’s ongoing efforts to expand its energy infrastructure to meet rising demand.

The anticipated capacity additions by 2032 include a diverse mix of energy sources: 80,000 MW from thermal power, 25,010 MW from hydropower, 14,300 MW from nuclear energy, and 50,760 MW from pump storage plants (PSPs). Additionally, there are plans to add 510 MW from small hydro projects, 143,980 MW from solar power, and 23,340 MW from wind power. This expansion underscores India’s commitment to diversifying its energy portfolio and increasing the share of renewable energy in its overall power generation capacity.
