The Electronics City Industries Association (ELCIA) and the India Electronics & Semiconductor Association (IESA) have partnered to boost India’s sensor production and reduce reliance on imports. They plan to establish a Centre of Excellence (ECoE) focused on sensor technologies, aiming to make India a global leader in the field. This initiative seeks to address India’s growing demand for sensors and contribute to the growth of the nation’s semiconductor and electronics sectors. The partnership leverages technologies like MEMS, NEMS, IR, UV, and Laser, with an initial focus on industrial sensors.The Indian sensor module market is currently valued at around Rs 20,000 crore and is projected to reach Rs 31,000 crore by 2027. The ELCIA and IESA collaboration aims to capitalise on this growth by fostering innovation, enhancing manufacturing capabilities, and promoting technological advancements within India. The partnership’s ultimate goal is to transform India into a major player in sensor technology, serving both domestic and international markets.
What does ECoE will provide?
The ECoE will concentrate on sensor design, manufacturing, and applications. This focus aligns with India’s broader ambition to become a “Product Nation.” The initiative aims to lessen the country’s dependence on sensor imports, which currently account for over 90% of the market.

Sensors are needed in myriad applications and Focusing on sensor design, manufacturing and Applications will reduce reliance on imports and contribute to the growth of India’s semiconductor and electronics sectors,” stated Ashok Chandak, President of IESA.
What does this partnership indicate?
The partnership plans to utilise advanced technologies such as analog and digital sensors using semiconductors, Micro-electromechanical Systems (MEMS), Nano-electromechanical Systems (NEMS), Infrared (IR), Ultraviolet (UV), and Laser technologies. MEMS and NEMS, which integrate mechanical and electronic components, are especially critical for industrial sensors. While the initial focus will be on industrial sensors, the ECoE plans to expand into other verticals in the future.
